It's not insane. It's just dumb.
OK, so for two years you've basically been led on by some jerk who admits to liking you, but keeps holding a flame for some lady who you know he's never going to see again, but he made some promise to her or something back in the day and now everyone is miserable because he won't admit to himself that he's never going to see her again and just ask you out.

How do you make this situation tolerable?

ok i'm going to give you an answer here but you're probably not going to like it.

you can't force people to move on. it probably won't work, it'll probably just blow up in your face.

that being said, you can force it. if you're anything like me, you will force it. and sometimes, it works out. a lot of the rest of the time...
