OK, so for two years you've basically been led on by some jerk who admits to liking you, but keeps holding a flame for some lady who you know he's never going to see again, but he made some promise to her or something back in the day and now everyone is miserable because he won't admit to himself that he's never going to see her again and just ask you out.
And if his response is, OH GEE KATIE, I STILL HAVE A GIRLFRIEND BUT I THINK YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL AND SMART AND FUNNY AND BLAH BLAH BLAH AND I WOULD DATE YOU IF I WAS SINGLE? What then?

you can't force people to move on. it probably won't work, it'll probably just blow up in your face.
that being said, you can force it. if you're anything like me, you will force it. and sometimes, it works out. a lot of the rest of the time...
